Pittsburgh-based smart grid technology firm BPL Global [1] announced an agreement today to acquire Rochester, N.Y., demand management provider Connected Energy, marking BPL's second deal of the new year.

Earlier this month, BPL acquired Portland, Ore.-based Serveron, which offers on-line transformer monitoring and diagnostic services (see BPL Global acquires Serveron in smart grid deal [2]).

BPL did not disclose financial terms for either deal.

"By acquiring Connected Energy, BPL Global is providing electric utilities and independent demand and generation asset operators a complete demand management solution," said Keith Schaefer, CEO of BPL.

"What impressed us about Connected Energy was that its proven product is used by leading utilities and laboratories, including Duke Energy, Southern California Edison and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory."

BPL said more than 450 megawatts of demand and generation assets are being monitored, managed and controlled by customers using Connected Energy's systems.

BPL, which said today's transaction is subject to shareholder approval, plans to market Connected Energy's demand management technology in North America, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
