Siemens turbines to power two new UK offshore wind farms

March 7, 2007

Siemens is powering two offshore wind farms in the U.K. that have now begun construction.

Siemens Power Generation is to supply 54 wind turbines with a combined maximum capacity of 180 megawatts (MW) for the Lynn and Inner Dowsing projects in Lincolnshire on the east coast of England, developed by British Gas’ parent company, Centrica. The total budget for both projects is approximately €440 million.

Siemens will also assume responsibility for operation and maintenance for an initial period of five years.

Last month the Siemens announced it would supply the grid connection for the Lynn and Inner Dowsing projects.

These latest two projects are to play an important role in Centrica’s portfolio. On completion, expected by the end of 2008, Lynn and Inner Dowsing will be Britain’s largest offshore wind farm development.

The turbines will then supply approximately 130,000 household customers served by British Gas and Scottish Gas with environment-friendly wind-based electricity.

Centrica already operates the 26-MW onshore wind farm Glens of Foudland near Huntly in Scotland, supplied by Siemens.

Siemens also has two other ongoing offshore projects: Lillgrund in Sweden and Burbo Banks in Liverpool Bay on the British west coast. Both projects are scheduled for commissioning in late 2007.

The Power Generation Group of Siemens AG is one of the premier companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2006, Siemens PG posted sales amounting to more than €10 billion and received new orders totaling €12.5 billion.
