Veolia to build desal plant in Fujairah

August 30, 2007

France's Veolia Environnement (NYSE: VE) said today its Sidem subsidiary would build a new desalination plant in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

The facility will be located in Qidfa and is expected to produce 590,000 cubed meters per day of desalinated water.

Veolia said the contract represents $805 million in revenues over the duration of the project.

"We are very pleased to be involved in this new project which, coming just a few weeks after the Marafiq contract in Saudi Arabia, strengthens our already solid presence in this region," said Antoine Frérot, CEO of Veolia Water.

In June, the company said it would build an 800,000 cubed meters per day plant in Jubail. The company said that deal is worth $945 million (see Veolia awarded huge desalination contract in Saudi Arabia).

Commissioning of the Fujairah plant is scheduled for summer 2010.

Veolia said the facility would have 12 MED desalination units, each with a production capacity of 38,500 cubed meters per day, and a reverse osmosis desalination unit with a production capacity of 128,000 cubed meters per day.

The Sidem subsidiary has 73 desalination plants in the region.

Its most recent contracts include the Saudi Arabia plant, a 270,000 cubed meters per day plant in Bahrain, and another Saudi Arabia plant that pumps out 267,000 cubed meters per day.
