Santa Rosa, Calif., electric vehicle maker ZAP (OTC BB: ZAAP) said today is signed a distribution agreement for Canada.
ZAP said Vancouver's New Fuel Systems made an initial order for $1 million electric cars, trucks, mopeds, scooters and other vehicles.
New Fuel Systems plans to open retail locations throughout Canada in time to market electric transportation during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The Winter Olympics are set to be held in Whistler, British Columbia, just north of Vancouver.
ZAP, an acronym for Zero Air Pollution, said it has sold more than 100,000 vehicles to customers in more than 75 countries since 1994.
Known for its compact cars and trucks, the company announced plans in January for a high-end sports car called the ZAP-X, based on Lotus Engineering's existing APX concept car body (see Look out Tesla... ZAP building electric supercar).
ZAP and New Fuel said they believe Canada, which signed onto the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol in 2002, is a prime market for zero emission vehicles.
The U.N. treaty requires the country to reduce emissions to 6 percent below 1990 levels during the 2008 to 2012 commitment period.
The 2010 Winter Olympics is being promoted by Vancouver as the first ever "green" Olympic Games, promoting environmental stewardship and impact reduction.
