While they announced intentions to develop solar in Ontario last November (see SunEdison and SkyPower partner for Canadian solar farms), SunEdison and SkyPower today announced a first formal contract.
A 9.12 megawatt solar project, to be located in Norfolk County in South-Central Ontario, will interconnect with local utility Norfolk Power. The solar power will be generated and used to meet the needs of the local Norfolk region.
"Demand for electricity is at its highest during the hot summer months. This solar park will be at maximum production during the summer and will significantly help Norfolk Power meet our local customers' energy needs," said Fred Druyf, President & CEO of Norfolk Power.
A 20 year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the solar park was awarded to SkyPower Corp. and SunEdison Canada under the Ontario Power Authority's Standard Offer Program. SkyPower and SunEdison Canada will own, build and maintain the park.
Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2007. The project is to be operational by early 2008.
The two companies say they've targeted 50 megawatts of deployments across the province.
SkyPower is a leading independent Canadian renewable energy developer with interests in over 50 wind and solar projects at various stages of development across 12 provinces/states. The company also has over 1,000 MW of wind energy under development in India.

Solar deployment
Submitted on May 20th, 2007 by InterestedReaderOptisolar and others have 3 years to build these solar facilities from the day that they obtain approval from the OPA. This means that most of these systems probably won't be fully operational until 2010.
The job creation coming from solar power is higher than any other renewable energy technology. This prompted many anti-solar officials in Germany to change their mind about the solar program there when they came into power. It is about time that Canada benefited from the cleantech boom.
