ENDESA’s (NYSE: ELE) European branch has increased its generation facilities in Italy by adding seven new wind farms with 240 MW installed capacity, following a framework agreement signed with Gamesa to acquire wind farms in this country.
The acquisition in February 2007 of the last two companies included in the agreement, which own the construction and management rights to the Piano di Corda and Serra Pelata wind farms, signals the successful conclusion of a process lasting almost three years, which gives ENDESA one of the largest wind power generation facilities in Italy (in 2009 it will have close to 400 MW on stream).
The agreement signed with Gamesa in December 2004 provided for the development of wind farms in Italy with 440 GWh in total generation capacity. This is the first contract of its kind to be signed in the Italian market and it underscores ENDESA's determination to protect the environment and promote sustainable development in markets in which it operates and also demonstrates Gamesa's commitment to ENDESA's renewable energies plan in Italy.
The wind farms that ENDESA Europe has purchased are Iardino in the Campania region, Montecute in the Basilicata region, Poggi Alti in Tuscany as well as Marco A. Severino I and II, Piano di Corda and Serra Plata in Calabria.
The annual generation capacity for these wind farms is estimated to reach around 500 GWh in 2008.
Along with the wind farms in Florinas, Trapani and Vizzine, these facilities will provide Endesa Europe with a 15% share of total installed wind-power capacity in Italy. The agreement will also ensure that 77% of its “green certificates” in the Italian market are provided for.
