Ford is holding the first public demonstrations today of its new fuel cell-powered Explorer SUV.
Packing hydrogen at 10,000 PSI in its storage tank (twice the pressure of other fuel cell vehicles!), the Explorer can apparently travel 350 miles on a single tank - which, as one pundit quipped, is probably far enough to actually be able to find a hydrogen filling station.
Ford developed the vehicle with the U.S. Department of Energy and has been quietly testing it this year around Detroit.
A Ford spokesman says the fuel cell Explorer, which can carry six passengers, has logged 17,000 test miles, including 1,556 miles traveled in one day.
The Explorer is being driven around the L.A. Auto Show. Its only emission: water vapor.
But don't line up to buy one. Fuel cell cars aren't expected to be widely available for years. Some say the next decade.
