Iberdrola, Salt River in wind power deal

July 28, 2008

Portland, Ore.-based Iberdrola Renewables said today that Arizona utility Salt River Project signed a deal to purchase power from Iberdrola's planned 63 megawatt Dry Lake wind farm in the state.

Iberdrola Renewables, a subsidiary of Spanish power utility Iberdrola, did not disclose financial terms of the agreement.

The Dry Lake Wind Project, which Iberdrola said is expected to be the first wind farm constructed in Arizona, will be located approximately 18 miles northwest of Snowflake on a combination of private, state and U.S. Bureau of Land Management public lands.

"SRP has been committed to pursuing an Arizona-based wind energy project for some time now," said Richard Hayslip, associate general manager of Sustainability, Risk Management, Environmental Services & Land Management at Salt river.

"Adding wind energy to our resource mix will provide more clean energy for our customers while at the same time helping to increase the overall renewable energy supply in Arizona."

In June, Provo, Utah-based Raser Technologies (NYSE: RZ) signed a 20-year power purchase agreement to deliver geothermal power to Salt River (see Raser, Arizona's Salt River Project in geothermal deal).

The power for that deal will come from Raser's planned Lightning Dock geothermal plant in New Mexico, expected to begin delivering electricity to Salt River by Dec. 15.

Under today's wind power deal, Salt River will buy the entire output from Phase I of the Dry Lake project, which Iberdrola said is expected to have 30 wind turbines and produce enough electricity to power more than 15,000 typical homes.

Iberdrola plans to begin construction on the wind farm in 2009, with work schedule to take between nine and 12 months.
