Perth, Australia-based Eden Energy said today that India's Standing Committee on Emission Regulation has approved the addition of up to 20 percent hydrogen to compressed natural gas for use in motor vehicles.
The company said the move opens the way for all the necessary approvals and licences for the use of its Hythane fuel to be issued, and for the licensing of Hythane outlets to be approved. Eden Energy said the use of its Hythane fuel reduces the emissions of nitrogen oxides.
"When this new regulation is gazetted, India will become the first country in the world to approve the use of Hythane as natural gas, thereby taking a major step forward in promoting the use of clean and renewable energy in automobiles," said the company in a statement.
In Canada, New Brunswick's Atlantic Hydrogen recently announced plans for a large-scale demonstration of its CarbonSaver technology, which also creates hydrogen enriched natural gas (see Cleaning up natural gas).
Eden Energy said it's working with Indian bus manufacturer Ashok Leyland to develop Hythane engines, and has an agreement with Gujarat State Petroleum to establish the first Hythane demonstration project in India. The Gujarat project is expected to start before the end of this year, initially involving two buses and then expanding to 50.
Eden Energy said it also plans to manufacture its HyRadix reformer in India, to be used for on-site production of hydrogen. Indian Oil is also working with Eden to build the first public hydrogen station in India, scheduled to be erected in Delhi during the second half of this year.
