Beijing's Sinovel ordered $20 million in wind turbine electrical systems.
Westborough, Mass.-based American Superconductor (Nasdaq: AMSC) said today it received a follow-on order for power electronics from Beijing's Sinovel Wind.
American Superconductor said Sinovel ordered $20 million in wind turbine electrical systems. This follows a $70 million order the company received from Sinovel in July 2007, and additional orders for grid interconnection of domestic and international wind farms.
"AMSC's wind power business continues to expand globally, with China serving as our largest market," said Greg Yurek, founder and CEO of American Superconductor.
Yurek said the company is also "working closely with two additional customers in China to help them initiate production of wind turbines in order to meet China's growing demand for zero-emission, wind generated electricity."
"We see strong potential to add a fourth Chinese customer this fiscal year and are working with other potential customers to expand our reach into other countries," said Yurek.
Under today's order, American Superconductor expects to ship its customized power electronic systems to Sinovel in fiscal 2008.
The company said its electronics will be used in Sinovel's 1.5 megawatt wind energy systems.
American Superconductor's turbine electrical systems control power flows, regulate voltage and control the pitch of wind turbine blades to maximize efficiency.
Sinovel, which develops, engineers and markets high tech wind energy systems, has its manufacturing base in Dahlia, China.
